SUSTAINABLE FASHION
“ AS A CONSUMER WE HAVE, SO MUCH TO CHANGE THE WORLD, BY JUST BEING CAREFUL IN WHAT WE BUY” - Emma Watson-
· So guys do u know “ what is
sustainable fashion?” I wanna know from you guys what you people know.
·
So
now, What is sustainable fashion?
sustainable
fashion can be defined as clothing, shoes, and accessories that are
manufactured, marketed, and used in the most sustainable manner possible, taking
into account environmental aspects. In practice, this implies continuous work
to improve all stages of the product’s life cycle, from design, raw material
production, manufacturing, transport, storage, marketing, and final sale, to
use, reuse, repair, remake, and recycling of the product and its components.
From an environmental perspective, the aim should be to minimize any
undesirable environmental effect of the product’s life cycle by:
(a) ensuring efficient and careful use of
natural resources (water, energy, land, soil, animals, plants, biodiversity,
ecosystems, etc);
(b) selecting renewable energy sources (wind,
solar, etc) at every stage, and
(c) maximizing repair, remake, reuse, and
recycling of the product and its components.
Sustainable fashion refers to clothing
that is designed, manufactured, distributed, and used in ways that are
environmentally friendly.
· Why it is important?
Sustainable or slow fashion encourages the use of locally produced, biodegradable fabrics which have little to no adverse effects on the environment. So these fabrics can eventually return to the ecosystem, once you are done wearing them. If the textile goes back to the earth and does not end up in landfills, it will create lesser wastage. as an aware consumer, you must make sure that you buy sustainable or eco-friendly fabrics from brands that are conscious of their carbon footprints.
The fashion
industry is responsible for 10 % of annual global carbon emissions
Around 20 % of
wastewater worldwide comes from fabric dyeing and treatment.
Every year the
fashion industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water — enough to meet the
consumption needs of five million people.
·
Reasons to go for sustainable fashion
1.
Quality reduces the waste
2. It's better for the planet
It's better for the people, to the people, by the people
·
How can we contribute to this sustainable
fashion
1.
The 30 wear test
2.
Be more informed about what you are buying and
have a reason for it
3. Change your attitudes to shopping - "Every
new item of clothing made has a substantial carbon footprint attached to its
manufacturing, but the amount of new energy needed to produce vintage clothing
is zero," Emma Watson previously said. "Vintage clothing has a
huge role to play in making fashion more sustainable and reducing a global
footprint that includes the 132m metric tonnes of coal used yearly through the
production of new fibers, dyeing, and bleaching of garments and the 6-9 trillion
liters of water used by the industry."
4.
Invest in trans-seasonal clothes
5.
Donate your unwanted clothes ( live by the mantra that every
time you buy something, you'll donate something.)
6.
Look after your clothes, so they last longer
7.
Learn how to repair clothing yourself
8.
Go for quality, over quantity
9.
Adjust how you spend your money?
Change what you splurge on. Instead of spending your savings on a dress
for a wedding or a pair of shoes that you'll only wear for special occasions,
spend your 'investment' cash on the things you wear every day. Stop thinking,
'I would never spend that much on a pair of jeans. Instead, consider that you
are only going to buy one pair of jeans this year, or one item this month – and
make it that. After a few seasons, you will have a high-quality, sustainable
wardrobe to be proud of.
Sustainable fashion encompasses not only eco-friendly methods but also the fair treatment of laborers, thus, amalgamating with the concept of ethical fashion. In conclusion, sustainable fashion concerns practicing methods in the textile industry that concerns the environment
As it is nicely said by “ Mahatma Gandhi “There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness”
